Yokohama F.Marinos defeated FC Tokyo to lift J.League title for the first time since 2004

Yokohama F.Marinos lifted J1 J.League title for the fourth time after beating their title rivals FC Tokyo 3-0 in the final league match on Saturday. The team from Yokohama last won the J.League title 15 years ago.

Yokohama opened the scoring through Thai International Theerathon Bunmanthan in the 26^th minute. With this J.League title win, Theerathon also became the first Thai & Southeast Asian player to ever win a major trophy in Japan. Erik Lima and Keita Endo scored the other two goals in the 44th and 77th minute respectively.

What an interesting neck and neck season it had been for both Marinos and Tokyo. Despite a demoralizing one-all draw against AFC Champions League finalist Urawa Reds at Ajinomoto in the their last match, Tokyo was still able to snatch the title away from Marinos should they able to win by 4 goals.

However, Yokohama’s Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou obviously had another plan which was to go full gear in front of a sell-out crowd & J1 J.League record of 63,854 at Nissan Stadium. All thank to the great marketing work of the club which saw them putting up huge posters updating all football fans matches after matches.

Yokohama F.Marinos will now play in 2020 AFC Champions League while second place FC Tokyo and third place Kashima Antlers will participate from the playoff stage on 28 January 2020.
