I came across this article during one of my shopping trips to town. It was a small article in one of the world leading futbol magazine but the impression it had on me was huge. Huge enough to attract my attention to read the article repeatedly, then I thought must as well just take a quick photo of that article using my mobile phone!
It was a short write-up on how much revenue brazilian club, Santos FC, is enjoying from their sponsorship, reported to be £25m, with sponsorship contracts divided up between different companies, BMG bank pays £5.9m to be the main shirt sponsor, while sportswear company Netshoes, pays £2.16m for sleeve sponsorship, food company, Seara, pays £1.18m as “shoulder sponsors” and CSU (technology) pays £790,000 to sponsor the numbers.
The figures are astonishing indeed! I wonder will there be a day where such lucrative deals will be falling on S-League clubs. I always feel that if a jersey is filled with multiple (sponsors) logos, the jersey itself becomes unique. Indirectly, it tells a alot about this club as we know that only reputable club attracts attention which in this case, its corporate sponsorship. Then again, it prompts us to the image problem which I personally feel our S-League can do better. Futbol standard of a league is important but the image of the league is one crucial factor too.
Imagine a professional futbol player in an oversize jersey running around? I thought a professional sportsman should have an image to uphold, aren’t it suppose to be fit or maybe muscular? Well, this tiny little example probably didn’t come across your mind but it does worth some thoughts on how we can improve the image of a professional futbol league.
Another thing could be the running of the clubs’ official website. Sad to say, not all professional clubs have a well-maintained website. Personally, I ever did drop a so-called professional club a couple of emails but there wasn’t a single reply received from them. Not even an auto-reply!
To establish a professional futbol league in today’s futbol world, there are more than what we are talking about here. The effort and pride involved are way beyond what can be written. In a way of another, I do hope that I can contribute to the growth of our league. To all JPF readers, how about we all do it together? Let’s feel proud of our league.
