Nike once again demonstrated their commitment to Singapore¹s grassroots and youth football scene by conducting the “Be Mercurial Elite Training” camp for 100 youth footballers from six schools at St. Patrick¹s Secondary School today under the watchful eyes of former Lions captain Nazri Nasir.
The “Be Mercurial Elite Training” camp provides the players with an authentic football training and scouting platform. Nazri, the current coach for the U-15 national team, was on hand to guide the players through a series of drills designed to test their speed and agility.
The session consisted of drills know as, SPARQ, which test the players Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction and Quickness. The Elite Training Life challenges are developed in partnership with Nike¹s top clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona. The players were tested on the Cristiano Ronaldo challenge, testing their agitlity and ball control skills. Whilst participating in the test this morning, three talented youngsters caught the eye of Nazri.
The occasional rain showers did not dampen the spirits of the players participating in the afternoon session, who were in good sprits throughout the different drills. Another three boys also caught the eye of the former Singapore skipper.
All currently playing in the national B-division, the six boys, 16-year-olds Muhammad Hilmi Bin Abu Talib (Woodlands Secondary School), Muhammad Harith Riqi Bin Razali (Dunearn Secondary School), Muhammad Haiqal Bin Razali (Hong Kah Secondary School) and Muhammad Urffi Bin Mohammad Nahwi (St Patrick’s Secondary School), as well as Muhammad Sufi bin Muhammad Jantan (Serangoon Garden Secondary School) and Geordan Leicester (St Patrick’s Secondary School), both 15, will now have the opportunity to train with Nazri and the U-15 team during their National Football Acamedy training session next week.
Catching his breath at the end of the session, Urffi said, “I am happy to be selected as it will make my family really happy and proud. My family has been really supportive of me and being selected means that I have the potential to go further.”
Speaking after the two sessions, Nazri said: “These events help me as a coach to see all aspects of the boys game and ended with a game helps me to see how the boys cope and play in a game situation. Through these camps, we can identify talented kids with potential to play for the national youth teams.”
Added Nike Singapore Country Marketing Manager Vijaya Kumar Jayaraj: “The Nike Be Mercurial Elite Training camp aims to inspire young players to achieve their potential and fulfill their dreams by giving the players access to the best coaching and latest innovations.”
