Having played in Indian Super League and Australia’s A-League previously, what is your impression of Asian football?
“Honestly, I dare say Asian football is quite impressive after having played for Atletico Kolkata and Central Coast Mariners in India and Australia respectively. Even before that, I travelled to Asia a lot while playing for Barcelona as well. And of course now, with my current role as La Liga Ambassador, I continue to travel to Asia frequently too.
It is really amazing to see how Asian football has changed over the years. The football here has developed rapidly and united with many top coaches from Europe. The European coaching flair is so strong here that the European players will think that they are still playing in Europe!
Think about it, there is another reason why Asian football is changing and improving – that is their passion for the game.
I love to sit at the street and watch the kids playing football. Previously, I would see the kids playing cricket, basketball and many other sports but now, whenever I’m in Vietnam, India or even Singapore, I see kids playing football! And that’s simply because they love football. They want to continue growing and improve their football.
The Asian countries are getting more supports and resources for their National team these days. So the vast improvement is no sheer luck. So the question they are asking now is when do they get to see their players playing in Europe? Well, the efforts are starting to bear fruits. Now, we see more Asian players playing in La Liga and in all other top leagues in Europe.
And we are going to see more.”
