Instructing some of the best players around in France, Qatar and Congo, to move according to his whistle, this futbol coach definitely has all it takes to contribute to Singapore’s futbol! Former S-League Championship Coach, Patrick Vallée, was back in Singapore for a short holiday and Junpiter Futbol has the privilege to meet up with him. So in his opinion, what needs to be done to improve Singapore’s S-League and National Team? Junpiter Futbol shares with you exclusively!
JPF: After Etoile, what are you busy with these days?
PV: Well, I returned to France to coach a Division-4 team, AFC Compiégne. The team did well and gained promotion to Division-3.
JPF: In fact, you did extremely well in your debut season in the S-League. Can you tell us more about your coaching background?
PV: I am a qualified UEFA ‘A’ License holder. I spent most of my coaching career in France where I leaded teams like Pacy sur Eure and Beauvais to gain promotion. Oversea wise, I headed the Federation of Youth development in Qatar and was a former Head Coach of Congo National Team in Africa.
JPF: You had experienced S-League futbol with Etoile, so in your opinion, how can Singapore’s futbol improve further?
PV: Well, back in my S-League’s days in year 2010, the quality of play between the top teams and the bottom teams was a big difference. The teams have to minimize their gaps (quality of play) where the bottom teams have every opportunity to upset the top teams and fight for the championship. It should not just be those 2-3 teams alone. Playing attractive futbol with a winning mentality, has to be instilled to the players which should have been done to the players at a young age. Effort has to put in by the teams to connect with their respective fans on a more regular basis. Bring in more quality foreign players and coaches to the S-League, they might be able to raise the standard. The COE is doing fine, just have to be patient. Overall, S-League is on the right track.
JPF: Singapore National Team?
PV: The pressure of playing at the International level is definitely higher than the domestic league. To how well the players are performing for the National Team, it depends on the quality of S-League.

JPF: Which local player impressed you the most?
PV: I remember this young lad, Hariss Harun from (then) Courts Young Lions. And also, Aleksandar Duric of Tampines. Duric is a great example for all Singapore futbol players.
JPF: Name one “famous” player whom you have worked with previously.
PV: Steven N’zonzi. He is currently playing for Blackburn Rovers.
JPF: Have you ever thought of returning to the S-League?
PV: Yes, definitely. In fact, I would like to contribute to the S-League too. I have won the S-League Championship with Etoile previously, now I would like to see myself lifting the trophy again with a local club. I am open to all options.
