Japanese football players in ASEAN region and as well as local coaches are set to benefit from the well established football coaching system here in Singapore. As part of the partnership between FAS/S.League and JFA/J.League, the associations will jointly conduct a JFA ‘C’ license coaching program in Singapore from 11 – 18 November 2013.
For this first ever overseas JFA ‘C’ license coaching program, selected Japanese players in ASEAN countries and Singapore coaches selected by FAS, approximately 20 pax will be participating in a mixed practical & theory program which will be held at Jalan Besar Stadium under the whistle of JFA Instructor, former Albirex Niigata coach Wakasugi Toru.
In an exclusive email from JFA/J.League to Junpiter Futbol, JFA/J.League shared their objectives as well as their vision with the Singapore-based football website.
JPF: How does this coaching program come about and what does JFA/J.League want to achieve with this collaboration with FAS/S.League?
JFA/JL: Many people in ASEAN region know that the quality of Japanese coaches and its coaching system is one of the best in Asia. However, most of the Japanese coaches are only working in J.League. JFA and J.League believe that their coaches should contribute more overseas to help with the development of football coaching. As the number of Japanese football players has increased in this region significantly, JFA/J.League has identified these Japanese players are the potential candidates as future coaches. Reason being they are used to the language, culture and football in this region.
This course was originally meant to be held for Japanese football players playing in the region so as to provide them with the same opportunity to be involved in such a coaching course as in Japan. Eventually, we decided to offer a few coaching slots to FAS. As our JFA ‘C’ license is different from AFC ‘C’ license, we hope FAS will benefit from learning our coaching program and also hope all the participants would utilize their experience to develop their coaching skills in the near future.
JPF: Was the signed MOU between FAS & JFA months ago the reason why JFA chose Singapore to start this first ever overseas coaching course instead of other countries?
JFA/JL: The signed MOU between FAS & JFA and S.League & J.League is certainly one of the factors why we have chosen Singapore. But at the same time, it is also because Singapore has got the most number of Japanese players playing in the domestic league in this ASEAN region. Albirex Niigata Singapore team is also assisting us with the organizing of this program.
JPF: Currently, is there any plan to send any Singapore coach to any J.League club upon the completion of this coaching program?
JFA/JL: Not at this moment as this JFA ‘C’ license course focuses mainly on the coaching of young players (U-12). However, we believe there will be such possibility in the near future. In fact, we have worked with FAS while they conducted the AFC Pro license coaching last year. The participants from Singapore came to Japan and visited some of our J.League clubs.
JPF: Can we know more about this JFA ‘C’ license instructor, Coach Wakasugi Toru?
JFA/JL: 57 years old Coach Wakasugi is a normal head coach of Albirex Niigata, mainly overseeing the entire youth academy. Coach Wakasugi is also a Professor at Niigata University of Health and Welfare, Department of Health and Sports.
