Thailand U16, also known as the Chang Thailand was hosted by Australia’s Footskills U18 at the Singapore’s biggest international youth tournament, SingaCup 2016.
Although the Thais were expected to walk over their opponent easily, it was the Australian team who drew the first blood to give themselves an early one-nil lead. However, the Thais quickly got back in shape as they recovered in the second half. Eventually, Thailand U16 won the game 3-2.
It was a sweet comeback for Thailand U16 but it was another moment that caught everybody by surprise – an unexpected but heartwarming reunion for Thailand’s left-winger, Kotchaphon Nillaor and Footskills’ head coach, Ian Williamson.
Kotchaphon traveled to Singapore with one of the most established Thai League teams, Chonburi FC Girls to participate in the last edition of SingaCup 2015. However, instead of donning the jersey of the Sharks’, the young Kotchaphon, together with another fellow Chonburi FC Girls’ teammate, were actually “loaned” out to Footskills Girls U18 for that 1-week tournament, as each team was only able to register 18 players last year. Chonburi FC Girls brought a contingent of 20 players.
The young Thai winger repaid the Australian coach’s faith in her by putting in a remarkable performance throughout the tournament despite only knowing her new teammates just hours before the tournament kicked off.
Both the player and Australian coach met up once again for the first time (since last year) in the same tournament again in Singapore. The duo could not have asked for a best reunion moment when Thailand U16 (Chang Thailand) matched up against Footskills U18.
So how did the current Thailand U16’s winger, Kotchaphon repay coach Ian’s faith in her and guidance before the coach gave her a hug and a kiss on her forehead? The speedy winger skipped past 2 defenders and scored a cracker in the game against Footskills.
