Just when we needed some positive energies to lift Singapore football out of the dark so to speak, good news came knocking on Singapore football’s door – Safuwan Baharudin has signed for A-League’s Melbourne City on a 3-months loan deal. And that good news came 1 week after our National custodian, Hassan Sunny has just signed for Thailand’s Army United. Well, Singapore football is not dead just yet.
Today, our Facebook page is filled with nothing but just Safuwan’s photos. I am not surprised with the impact generated from the former LionsXII defender’s move to A-League at all. The fact that Safuwan is willing to get out of his comfort zone is already a brave start. It clearly shows his desire to test uncharted territory and that gives you a measure of his confidence and character.
Speaking to former FAS Technical Director, P.N Sivaji, who is currently on AFC Asian Cup assignment in Australia, via email, Coach Sivaji couldn’t praise enough of the Defender and the Down Under move. “Australian football is evolving into a possession game with passing, penetration and freedom of individual expression. Previously it used be quite similar to the old British way of hoofing it up to the big guys up front and feeding on the scraps. This evolving style will suit Safuwan as he is quite tidy on the ball.
“Safuwan reads the game well and is deceptively quick. He may look slow in his movements but because he thinks a lot quicker, he gets into positions quickly. He may not be the biggest but he defends well both on the ground and in the air. Over the years, he has shown to be strong mentally and one who keeps his feet on the ground. I really hope he can succeed and that will spur others to try their luck elsewhere,” added Coach Sivaji.
Regardless the outcome at the end of the season, both Safuwan and Hassan have presented Singapore football with new faith and hope. Something which genuine Singapore football fans have been waiting for. S.League footballers can start to dream again too.
All the best Safuwan and Hassan. Fly our flags high!
