Thousands, if not millions of football fans globally could have watched the live streaming of the highly anticipated K League opening match between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Suwon Bluewings on Friday.
But many might not be aware that there is another top division football league in Asia had already been resumed three weeks prior to the Korean’s – and that’s Taiwan Football Premier League.
The young 4-year-old Taiwan Football Premier League kicked off its 2020 season on 12 April after the coronavirus outbreak situation got better in Taiwan. And despite being one of the earliest football leagues to make a return, it has not solved their constant struggling to match up with the rest of the leagues in Asia.
“It is a fact that the standard of our League is not as high as most of the other Asian leagues hence not many people know about us. But we are already doing our best to improve in all aspects of our games. And hopefully, more people will start to take notice of our football soon, “ commented Pan Wen-Chieh, Taiwan National Team & Taiwan Steel’s Goalkeeper.
Similar to K League, the kicking off of Taiwan Football Premier League in mid-April has garnered attentions from all over the world especially with all the top football leagues in Europe suspended.
Hence, Chinese Taipei Football Association (CTFA) leveraged on the opportunity to showcase Taiwanese football by introducing English commentary in their weekly weekend live streamed match. And now with the increase in viewership, CTFA has doubled their effort with more matches coverage in English language too.
Not a bad effort by the football association taking into consideration Taiwan is a Chinese-speaking country. And to give credit when it’s due, China League 1’s Changchun Yatai & Chinese Taipei National Team’s captain, Chen Po-liang is one of the first to applause CTFA’s effort.
“I can see that CTFA are putting in tremendous effort to make the Premier League games be available for all globally. To me, this is an extremely great move, as not many people know where Taiwan is. Even if they do, not many people know there is actually a Football Premier League in Taiwan. ” said the Chinese Taipei striker.
“And for the players playing in the Premier League, I believe all of them will put in 110% because they know that the world will be watching them!” added Chen.
There are a total of 8 teams playing in Taiwan Football Premier League. Taipei based Tatung FC has won all titles since the first edition kicked off in year 2017. Currently, all League matches are still being played behind closed door.
