The time is now for Singapore’s players, as they step on to the pitch and embark on the journey to win Southeast Asia’s most prestigious biennial football championship, the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2012, held from 24 November to 22 December 2012. The new National Team Kits are Nike’s most environmentally-friendly and technologically advanced – it is made from 100% recycled polyester and considered materials, and designed to bring out the best in athletic performance.
Singapore and Thailand are the only Southeast Asian countries to have won the AFF Suzuki Cup a record three times. The Lions, who won in 1998 and clinched back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2007, are determined to put up a strong performance in the upcoming competition and are striving to achieve a fourth title.
This will be the moment for players to shine and play for the pride of the country and fans as the Lions don the National Team Kit designed by Nike and the federation. Much hope will rest on the shoulders of talented midfielder, Hariss Harun (21 years old), who will be making his debut in this year’s tournament, having missed out the 2008 and 2010 editions due to injury.
“I’m very excited to finally make my debut at the AFF Suzuki Cup,” said Hariss. “I am raring to go and will definitely do my best to help Singapore progress to the later stages, and hopefully go on and win it for a fourth time.”
Vijaya Kumar Jayaraj, Marketing Manager of Nike Singapore added,“We are happy to be supporting the Lions once again. We hope that this will inspire the players to achieve a breakthrough performance, and bring the title back to Singapore.”
Each federation kit is developed around key insights inspired by the national identify and the distinctive football culture of every nation. Rich detailing throughout the jersey and shorts is inspired by the history and heritage of each team.
The Singapore home kit will be in the traditional red and white hue that is synonymous with the Lions and the city state. The away kit is a throwback to historic jerseys of the past and in classic blue, which was the first color choice for the jerseys in the 1970s and 1980s, reflecting Singapore’s identity as an island city surrounded by tranquil waters. To capture the spirit of the team, an abstract Lions logo is emblazoned on the inside of the jersey meant to inspire and ignite a sense of national pride amongst the players.
Said Football Association of Singapore (FAS) President, Zainudin Nordin, “Nike has designed a vibrant and energetic look for the Lions’ new kit which we are certain would be well received by both players and fans alike. We believe the new playing kit will further inspire the national team players to perform to their best abilities during the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup, which kicks off later this month. FAS is pleased to have a partner like Nike which is renowned for its innovative product technology. We appreciate their contribution to a local football over the years and look forward to further developing this partnership.”
Singapore’s national kits, priced at SGD 89, will be available from 15 November at all major Nike distributors and Weston Corporation outlets.
