True Bangkok United has won the inaugural Selangor Asia Challenge 2020 (SAC) after defeating hosts Selangor on penalties last Sunday. Despite that was just a pre-season tournament, Bangkok United & Thai International Mika Chunuonsee was delighted with the triumph on overseas soil as he sets his sight on winning more in the upcoming Thai League season.

“We played 2 competitive games in 2 days and that was never an easy task. One of our main aspects of this pre-season tournament was to ensure every player had some playing time. Glad that we managed to give all of our players a run,” commented Mika, a Thai of Welsh descent.

“We are definitely thankful to Selangor FA and the fans in Malaysia for making this a memorable experience for us. Winning this SAC 2020 is indeed a morale booster for Bangkok United but winning is a habit, we hope that this triumph is the first of many to come this season,” added Mika.

After the pre-season victory in Malaysia, Mika is now focusing on his seventh season with Bangkok United that they are scheduled to kick off their first league match on 15 Feb 2020. So what target has he set for himself, his club and country?

“Last year was a disappointing year. We had a good team last season but we also had too many injuries including myself who was out for half a season. And you know that’s not a good sign if you are aiming for the title.

This season, we have signed a good player Hajime Hosogai. He believes in our team and that’s why he is here. The mood in the camp is good and we are all focusing on preparing ourselves for the league,” commented Mika.

For the past 3 years, the True Bangkok United defender has been enjoying some great International football representing Thailand in the AFC Asian Cup, AFF Suzuki Cup and many more. Although slowing down is definitely not part of his plans now, what will we be expecting of him in the next 5 years?

“I truly enjoyed some great international football with Thailand at the highest level at the moment. It was not exactly a huge difference for me in terms of playing standard simply because we have got many international players in our existing Bangkok United too. So day in day out I am training with some of the bests in probably the best football league in Southeast Asia. I am always ready to give my best for both club and country anytime.

And like what I have told myself and to my close friends around me, I am feeling fit and I still think that I have got a few more good years in which I would like to continue to play as many game as possible, and to win as many trophy as possible,” said the defender.

And target for him this season?

“Last few seasons I was really bothered by the injuries that I had. Now, I really hope to continue to work on everything and to be fit to be featured for both Bangkok United and Thailand more regularly. Bangkok United is one of the top teams and knowing that if you started to play more frequently, the chance of being selected for the National Team will be higher. To me, club comes first. I will just have to continue to work hard, stay fit and healthy, the rest will take care of itself.”

Mika Chunuonsee is born in Wales to a Welsh mother & Thai father. He represented Wales U-17 in the UEFA U-17 Championship but moved back to Thailand when he turned 20 year old. The 1.8m tall defender played for Muanthong United, BEC Tero Sasana & Suphanburi. And he has registered more than 151 caps (12 goals) for Bangkok United since 2014.
