The first major signing for S-League this season and it has proven to be an important step to put Singapore’s S-League on the international football map. 8 times domestic champion, SAF FC has signed former Shimizu S-Pulse, Tottenham Hotspur and Japan International, Kazuyuki Toda.
The 35 years old defensive midfielder put up a solid, aggressive performance during the FIFA World Cup 2002 where eventually he caught the attention from European clubs. Citing Barcelona’s Xavi and Iniesta as his favorite players, this hardworking player certainly has something to offer in the middle of the SAF FC’s park.
This is not the first time SAF FC is associated with Japanese football. Over the years, we have seen some great Japanese players like Norikazu Murakami and Kenji Arai donning the blue jersey. Recently, the club has also signed a MOU with Japanese futsal brand, Svolme, where the team players and officials will be wearing the colorful apparels for this upcoming season and as well as next season, 2014. Probably, Svolme could be one of the factors which clinched the deal with Toda as his former club, FC Machida Zelvia, is sponsored by Svolme too.
We are about a month out from the start of the S-League season. Hope that more major signings will be reported and if any of the brands out here can link some great names to the S-League clubs, please do not hesitate to do so!
