Chelsea and Formula 1 partner, Sauber F1 Team, in conjunction with F1 in Schools today offered an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity bringing a cross-sport experience to 48 young people in Singapore.

The kids, aged 11-14, from Henderson Secondary School and Chelsea FC Soccer School Singapore, took part in a soccer clinic and had the chance to build and race a balsa wood model car, with points awarded for their football skills and how their car performed in the races. The youngsters were competing to win an incredible behind-the-scenes Sauber garage tour this Saturday at 3pm.

Sauber driver, Esteban Gutiérrez, gave a unique insight into life as a professional racing driver and also joined in on the football field during the soccer clinic. “It’s always a great experience working with our partner Chelsea FC, F1 in Schools and the kids. It’s great to see how enthusiastic they are about racing and soccer. You can see the hopes and determination some of the kids have. When I was younger I wanted to be a professional racing driver, so I hope I can be a role model. My career shows that you can accomplish your dreams if you put your mind to it. There are always opportunities and you should not be afraid to take them,” said Esteban.

“Our partnership with the Sauber F1 Team is unique and groundbreaking. We are pleased to be able to leverage on this partnership and expose the youngsters to professional football coaching and an introduction to F1. Hard work and perseverance is key not just in sport but also in life as demonstrated in today’s session and I hope we have inspired the youngsters to continue to pursue their interests,” concluded Mr Adrian New, Managing Director Asia Pacific, Chelsea Football Club.

About Sauber F1 Team

In 1970 Peter Sauber founded his company and designed his first racing car in the cellar of his parents’ house. The race team grew steadily and enjoyed its first major international successes in the late 1980s. As the Mercedes works team, Sauber celebrated a one-two victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1989 and back-to-back Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in the World Sports Car Championship in 1989 and 1990. In 1993 Sauber entered Formula One. Among the team’s F1 highlights have been a fourth-place finish in the Constructors’ World Championship in 2001 as an independent team and – in partnership with BMW – a one-two finish in the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix on the way to third place in the constructors’ standings that year. In 2010 Sauber became an independent outfit once again.
