24th Canon Lion City Cup kicked-off today at Jalan Besar Stadium. And immediately, one of the hot favorites, Singapore U-16, announced their arrival with a 2-1 victory over Ajax Amsterdam!
Ajax played a typical European style which we were expecting; quick short passes penetrating opponent’s half. Players from the Netherlands’ club had great technique. To compliment that further, they made good use of their strong physic too. However, Singapore’s were equally up to the task.
Captained by Singapore’s number-10, Adam Swandi, the team played to their head coach, Dejan Gluscevic’s instruction – put the balls behind Ajax’s defence, drew their defence out and cut-in. The specific strategy paid off and Singapore U-16 registered their very first win.
In an quick one on one interview with coach Dejan after the game, he shared, “we studied their formation, identified their weaknesses and countered their playing style. The moment they started to change their formation, we knew we could win this game”.
The other match of the evening, Singapore U-15 lost 1-2 to Brazil’s Vasco da Gama. More games coming up on Monday and the coming week. For more details, please log on to www.lioncitycup.com.
